Free Codeweavers Software For All
The Codeweavers “Great American Lame Duck Presidential Challenge” has ended in surprise and free software all day Tuesday (October 28, 2008) at the Codeweavers site.
When I actually got the site to work, they said that they removed the homepage because of the amount of traffic, but they had the download links active.
Give it a try here: Codeweavers
After you download the software, you have to enter your email address on a different page to get a serial number. I had to try that about ten times before it worked.
Good luck!
Google Chrome (BETA) for Windows
According to the Official Google Blog, Google has launched their new web browser to the public. You can read the original post here. It seems that Google has also created a 39 page “comic” that goes with the release. I started to read through it, but it lost my attention… look, something shiny… Anyways, you can view the comic here. If it’s more convenient for you, I’ve saved all the images used in the comic and zipped them up for my readers. You can download that here.
I tested it out today to see if I liked it, but only for a few minutes. It’s weird looking at first, but it seems pretty fast. I opened a few of my pages just to see if they rendered differently and for the most part, they were fine. As a web designer, all I need is another browser that I have to design my pages for. I’m hoping that Chrome renders code the way it should (like Firefox). Just out of curiosity, I also checked the memory usage and needless to say, it was a lot less than my current Firefox session (6,656K compared to that of Firefox using 162,340K).
Here’s a screenshot of this site using Google Chrome:

I would have to say that I’m not switching anytime soon, but it will be interesting to keep up on this and see Google’s progress as they come out with new releases. It will also be interesting to see how the general user responds to the release of Chrome.

Reorder your taskbar with Taskbar Shuffle
I am very particular about the order of windows on my taskbar as I work on my computer. I always keep Firefox in the left most position on my taskbar. I’ve always wished that I could just switch them around like a Firefox tab. Well, now I can with Taskbar Shuffle. Taskbar Shuffle is a simple, small, free utility that lets you drag and drop your Windows taskbar buttons to rearrange them.
After installation, you can double-click the icon in the tray to bring up the options screen.

Here’s a shot of what it looks like when you actually move a program in the taskbar:

How to download RealPlayer files
Have you ever tried to download a full “.rm” file and all you get is a 47byte file? You know that’s definitely not the full version. That’s just the file that tells RealPlayer to stream the file from another location. After some research online, I came up with the solution. If you’ve already downloaded the small file, then you can skip to step #2.
Step #1 - Download the initial file using something like DownThemAll, which is a downloader add-on for Firefox. You do use Firefox right? If you don’t, you shouldn’t be allowed to use the internet. Anyways…
Step #2 - Open that small file in Notepad. If you see a line that starts with “http://”, then just copy/paste that into a new firefox tab. If the line starts with “rtsp://”, then you need to use a program called FlashGet.
Both programs mentioned above are free and are fairly self-explanatory, so I’m not going to go into much detail about using them. You should be able to figure it out. I have faith in you!
Now, I need to figure out how I can burn an .rm video file to DVD with decent quality.
